Dallas County Hospital Offers Tips on Exercising During the Cold of Winter

Eventually, the weather in central Iowa is likely to revert to the cold we’re used to during the winter. When that happens, it can sometimes be a struggle to stay active and exercise.

With that in mind, Rehabilitation Director Clint Lutterman from 21st Century Rehab at Dallas County Hospital offers some advice for staying fit this winter. First of all, he says there are many simple exercises that can be done inside the home, such as doing repetitions of getting up and down from a chair, squats, heel-raises and toe-raises, or walking up and down stairs. Lutterman also says if you’re willing to travel a little bit, there are some great places where you can go walking inside, which he points out is a good workout.

“So when you go to the grocery store, maybe plan to go a little bit longer and just walk the aisles a little bit, just to get a little bit more activity, a little bit more exercise. The hospital has a walking track set up, a path that you can mark out that you know how far you’ve walked. And we get a lot of people that come up to the hospital and just walk the hallways. It’s open, there’s a lot of space, so there are a lot of people that do that.”

Lutterman adds, the most important thing to remember when trying to stay fit during the winter is to stay active. He says even if you stay inside, you can move around and do something, which is better than being sedentary. For those that plan to continue exercising outside even in the winter, Lutterman reminds you to wear layers that you can take off as your body heats up, and emphasizes the importance of staying hydrated.
