Scranton Mayor Reflects on First Year and Looks Forward to Progressive Second Year

scranton welcomeScranton’s new mayor just completed his first year in his new leadership role.

Cole Gustoff says 2018 was a challenging year considering some major issues that he had to deal with including: the city clerk resigning this past summer, the United States Postal Service closing the city’s post office in October and the resignation of a public works employee. Gustoff notes that while they’ve hired a new city clerk and public works employee, the post office remains closed. Gustoff says the post office was closed due to structural concerns and the USPS has a lease agreement with the building owner.

“I have been in touch with the building owner and I’m not going to speak on his part, but he is taking steps to resolve this issue.”

Another issue for the City has been code enforcement and Gustoff points out how the City is going to address that this spring.

“The City will be contracting with Region XII (Council of Governments) to start doing code enforcement. This will make it more fair to the people in town that each person that’s not in compliance will be in violation and will get a notice. We will also be starting a rental inspection that will be contracted out in the spring of 2019. So any rental property in town will have to be registered and their properties will be inspected.”
