Ram basketball teams start 2019 with HOIAC doubleheader at Saydel

The 2019 portion of Greene County High School’s varsity basketball schedule begins tonight with a Heart of Iowa Activities Conference girl/boy doubleheader at Saydel High School in Des Moines. Coverage on KG98 and streaming on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com starts at 5:45 p.m. with the girls playing at 6 p.m. and the boys to follow.

The focus for the Greene County teams could be on the opposite ends of the floor. The Greene County girls find it difficult to score, while the Greene County boys have had trouble lately stopping teams from scoring.

The girls’ game has the 0-9 Rams facing the 0-10 Eagles. Greene County averages 22 points per game and Saydel sits at an even 20. First year head coach Tyler Westhoff’s Rams shoot 19.7% from the field and 42.4% from the foul line. The Eagles shoot 19.5% from the field and 49.6% from the free throw line. The Rams have a 21.3 field goal percentage from three-point range while Saydel is at 12.7% beyond the arc. Saydel averaged 27 turnovers per game and the Rams average 22.

The Greene County boys are 4-6 and Saydel is 2-7. The Rams have dropped their last three games and in all three contests, opponents scored well above their season average at 24, 24, and 29 more than when playing anyone other than the Rams. Coach Chris Nelson’s team is scoring more than 64 points per game, but is giving up 72. The Eagles average 51 points while allowing 73 per game, and they also enter tonight on a three-game losing streak.
