Jefferson VFW Needing More Members to Help Keep Voice in Congress

The Jefferson Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post is urging new members to join their organization.

Post #9599 Commander James Wasson says the organization is beginning to increase in age and once their members start to pass away and new members don’t join, there could be a ripple effect across the country. “Once we fall below one million members nationwide, we lose our voice in Congress for veterans. And that’s going to hurt all veterans, not just VFW members, all veterans. So we’re trying to do a push for membership and to get the younger people and the younger veterans in with us now.”

Wasson notes that there’s really no time commitment to be a VFW member, he just wants to increase the overall membership. He points out that a family member or relative can also fill out the necessary paperwork for their loved one who is currently serving to join the local organization. Wasson describes two additional changes to the qualifications to become a VFW member.

“Two of the qualifications is hostile pay or combat pay. If you get either one those you automatically qualify for the VFW. All you have to do is be able to show a pay stub, or as well call it in the military an MLES, and as long as you can show us you got that pay, you can join.”
