Perry School District Educating Public on Necessity of Industrial Tech and Wrestling/Multipurpose Room Project

PHS Industrial Tech-Wrestling Room Floorplan

The initial floorplan has been approved and everything is set up for a bond referendum vote, as the Perry School District seeks to build new industrial technology and wrestling facilities.

Superintendent Clark Wicks says the estimated cost is $5.8 million to expand and renovate the current industrial tech facility and build a new wrestling and multipurpose room at the high school. To pay for it, the District is seeking a bond referendum of $6.5 million, which they believe will cover the construction and anything extra that comes up during the process. Wicks says a committee has been established that is working on educating the public on the necessity of the project, with the central theme being what they’re calling “The Three S’s”: space, safety, and skills.

“The rationale behind it is, if you go into the wrestling room and into the industrial tech room, you will see that it is extremely small. So space-wise, we need to get updated. Safety-wise, if you go into those places, it’s just amazing that we have not had more injuries. So we need to increase that space to allow for safety. And then for the industrial tech area, we want to continue to increase those student skills, so that that can match up to some of the needs that we have here in Perry in the manufacturing area, the building trades. And in order to do that, we have to have space to get the updated equipment.”

The vote on the bond referendum will be held on February 5th, and before then Wicks says there will be several opportunities for the public to educate themselves on the project.
